Kangaroo Care Saves Lives...
The simple act of holding your low-weight baby against your warm chest for hours (known as kangaroo care or skin-to-skin care) is proven through hundreds of strong clinical studies to help your baby gain weight and reduce the chances of infection and reduce the overall risk of death. In fact, UNICEF and most governments in the world have put in programs to make sure that every small baby is receiving skin-to-skin care from their parent or from a surrogate.
But It Needs to Be Done Regularly
To reap the benefits of kangaroo care, doctors suggest holding your baby in this position for eight hours a day, every day, until your baby is at least 2.5 kgs (5.5 lbs). This can be as much as two months!
And It Can Be Uncomfortable...
As a biomedical engineer from Stanford, I spent hours in NICU's observing babies and mothers doing kangaroo care by tying a towel or shawl around them and their baby. They had to be sitting the whole time, they were naked and exposed, and it was almost impossible to expect them to stay in that uncomfortable and hot position for any more than two or three hours. I figured there has to be a more convenient and comfortable way to do kangaroo care for moms and dads.
